Title: Altas Blizzard Relief... How you can help!

In the wake of winter storm Atlas which plowed through western South Dakota and parts of neighboring states October 4-5, the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association has been fielding hundreds of calls and emails from those wanting to help.  While we’re heartened at the outpouring of support coming from around the country, we are discouraging immediate donation of live animals.  With winter bearing down, those affected are struggling with clean-up operations in addition to the normal fall roundup, weaning, and pre-winter preparations.   Our focus at present is financial, physical, and psychological support for producers slogging through the gruesome clean-up process.

1.     Monetary Donations:  South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, South Dakota Stockgrowers Association, and the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association have teamed together to create the Ranchers Relief Fund.  To contribute with a credit card, please visit https://www.giveblackhills.org/27677 and click on the green “Donate Now” button.  If you prefer, mail a check made payable to Ranchers Relief Fund to Black Hills Area Community Foundation, PO Box 231, Rapid City, SD  57709.  Our Ranchers Relief Facebook page will be updated and closely monitored with any information as it becomes available.  Your financial donation to the Ranchers Relief Fund will be greatly appreciated and help with immediate expenses incurred such as carcass removal, fence repair, and roundup/hauling of strays.

2.     Material and Labor Donations:  The South Dakota Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (SDVOAD) is handling the organization of material and labor donations.  Within South Dakota, please call 1-877-708-4357 with offers of equipment or labor.  Out of state volunteers may call 1-605-274-1454.  When you call, be prepared to give your name, contact information, and specifics of what you are willing to do and/or donate.  This information will be put in the “pool” and matched with those needing assistance as they are identified in the coming days.

Again, on behalf of western South Dakota livestock producers, we thank you for taking the time to help out in their time of need.  All contributions, be they monetary or physical, are greatly appreciated.  It’s always good to know you aren’t fighting alone!
